SEPTEMBER  2006 – WEEKEND CAMP

On the Saturday, most black and brown belt members attended a long session where we updated ourselves on Kata Kudaka no Kusanku, a very long and involved Kata that displays all the very best of Shorinjiryu technique.

The Seniors dinner on Saturday night saw Tashi Des Paroz presented with the Australian Shorinjiryu Black Belt of the Year Award and Hanshi Myron Lubitsch from the Shorinjiryu Shinzen Kyokai announced as a special Black Belt of the Year recipient due to his great support and guidance of Australian Shorinjiryu over recent years.

Both recipients were truly deserving of their awards.

On Sunday, students from many Dojos attended our camp and Kyu grading with a number of Seiryukan students successful in their promotions. Congratulations to all.

This was another successful and friendly camp weekend and everyone enjoyed themselves.

March 2006
National Traning Camp 2006

Over the weekend of 18-19 March, over 50 members of the Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo Association travelled to Brisbane to participate in the annual National Training Camp.

This year's camp was attended by instructors and members of all 9 dojos - Kensuukan (Coonabarabran), Seiryukan (Brisbane), Torakai/Torakan (Logan City), Kensuikai (Innisfail), Yagizakai (Rockhampton), Shishikai (Brisbane), Seiryukai (Brisbane) and Kengokai (Sydney).

The Saturday kicked off with a welcome from our Chief Instructors, Shihan Jim Griffin, 5th Dan and Renshi Max Estens, 5th Dan, followed by a warm up. Then Tashi Anne Aylward (Torakai/Torakan) covered grappling with 2 opponents, based on the Sannin Kumite exercises. In the following session, Tashi Graeme Bowden (Kensuukan) covered fighting strategy, a rewarding experience based on Tashi Bowdo's extensive national and international competition success.

Following lunch, Shihan Jim and Tashi Lesley Griffin (Seiryukan) taught Naihanchin Waza, a 2 person yakusoku kumite drill based on the Naihanchin kata.  A complex drill, Naihanchin Waza consists of a variety of punching, kicking and striking techniques, along with grappling and throwing. The day was rounded out with an informative lesson on ground fighting and self defences from Tashi Peter Deasy (Kensuikai).  Tashi Peter really imparted the lesson that successful defence in a ground fighting scenario (as with any scenario) is based not upon passive defence, but on taking the initiative.

On Sunday, Tashi Des Paroz (Kengokai) taught an early morning session on Bojutsu, including preparatory exercises (junbi undo) and the first segment of the Gorin no Kumibo drill. Simultaneously with this, Shihan Jim Griffin and Renshi Max Estens conducted a kyu-grading test for a number of members.

After breakfast and warm up, we were joined by the Patron of Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo, Shihan Phil Hooper, 7th Dan.

The first session was a run through by Tashi Des Paroz and Sensei Mark Zaglas (Kengokai) on Kata Bunkai Drills, utilising the Tsuki Waza drill as a foundation, before working some self defence segments directly from 3 of the kata - Ananku, Naihanchin and Nijushiho.  These drills were designed to remind members that our kata have almost all of the key elements of defensive strategy and fighting tactics built into them - you just have to look.  To continue the grappling theme of the weekend, the final training session, conducted by Renshi Max Estens (Kensuukan) taught the A, B, C, D & E's of joint locking - a comprehensive drill regarding various locks and holds.  Many of these are found in many of the kata, and all participants enjoyed the opportunity to study these, as well as to hear the cries of pain from some of the senior instructors......

After lunch we moved onto a yudansha grading for 9 candidates attempting to progress to various black belt levels. The grading was a comprehensive test that actually started at the beginning of the Camp, with all candidates being constantly and repetitively tested on various aspects of the syllabus and the material being taught at the camp.  The 9 people listed in the news item below were successful in their endeavours.

The 2006 National Training Camp was a great success, being an opportunity for all members of our family to chip in and work together and learn a range of new material.  I am sure all present will have fond memories of the camp, and will look forward to next March for the next annual camp.

NOVEMBER 2005 - Day Camp

NOVEMBER CAMP AND TRAINING

November 26th and 27th saw Instructors and Students from Shorinjiryu Torakai, Shorinjiryu Torakan, Shorinjiryu Seiryukan and Shorinjiryu Kensuikai (Innisfail) gather in Kallangur for a seniors training session and day camp. A kyu grading was held following the day camp.

The Seniors Training Session (Saturday)

A 2 hour training session was helpful for the Seniors who assembled at the Shorinjiryu Seiryukan Dojo. We revised Naihanchin Waza and Sankakutobi Shodan Ichi and the session was appreciated by all who attended.

The Day Camp (Sunday)

Following a warm up, Sensei Anne Aylward began the day with an interesting session of self-defence against knife attacks. This was followed by Shihan Jim Griffin’s Kata Kusanku for the seniors and Sensei Luisa Colman, Amanda Bugden and Kylie Fletcher taking the juniors through Kata Naihanchin Yon.

The next session was dedicated to Shishiryu No Bo for the seniors (Shihan Jim) and Randori Renshu Ichi for the juniors (Sensei Lesley Griffin).

Following a short water break (it was 31C and very humid) the seniors progressed to Randori Naihanchin Waza and Kata Sankakutobi (Shihan Jim and Sensei Lesley) while the juniors tackled kata Ananku and Kata Gorin No Bo (Amanda and Kylie).

It was time for the Kyu gradings and once again the standard was high, we were all proud of the standard of those grading, the Shorinjiryu Seiryukan students were:-

Nick McGrory to 4th Kyu
Shannan Armstrong to 6th Kyu
Michael Bishop to 7th Kyu
Paul McDonnell to 8th Kyu
James Bishop to 8th Kyu

I was a great day and all went home tired but with a greater understanding and appreciation of our Shorinjiryu. The hail storm just prior to the end of the day added to the excitement. Thanks to all who attended and assisted on the day plus a special thank you to Sensei Trevor Maher and his students from Shorinjiryu Kensuikai, Innisfail North Queensland who flew down especially to train with us.

NOVEMBER 2005 - KOSHIKI NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Shihan Jim and Sensei Lesley made the trip to Tamworth on the weekend of the 13th November with Amanda Bugden. Shihan Jim and Sensei Lesley both participated as officials and Amanda competed in the girls 16-17 years Kata and Kumite events.

Amanda drew a very strong field in the Kata event as she was the only Kyu grade in the event, the other girls all being seasoned National and International competitors. Amanda performed a nice Naihanchin Yon and was pleased with her effort.

Amanda was narrowly beaten in her Kumite event (1 point) and thoroughly deserved her second placing. Congratulations Amanda.

Shihan Jim was elected National President at the weekend AGM. It was a great tournament, great dinner afterwards and a great weekend.

OCTOBER 2005 - KOSHIKI STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sunday October 30th saw 6 Seiryukan students competing in the Queensland Koshiki Championships, three for the first time. They all performed well and we are proud of all of them.

John McDonnell, (2nd place) Over 35 YO Kata performed a nice Ananku and will be better now that the first tournament is under his belt.

Amanda Bugden, performed Seisan for the first time at a tournament as she has only recently learned this complicated Kata, did well and will improve a she learns more about this Kata. Amanda fought well in the 16-17 YO Kumite and achieved (1st place), this was probably Amanda’s best kumite effort so far and she will improve from here.

Shannan Armstrong competed in the 10-11 YO modified rules kata (2nd place) and kumite (2nd place) then backed up for the points competition and won it (1st place). He really enjoyed himself and would have competed in any division if he was allowed.

Nick McGrory, (2nd place) in 10-11 YO modified rules Kata, he did well and is always keen.

Michael Bishop, (2nd place) in 8-9 YO modified rules Kata and (1st place) in modified rules Kumite did well and really enjoyed his first tournament.

James Bishop, (2nd place) in 6-7 YO modified rules Kata and (2nd place) in modified rules Kumite also did well and couldn’t get the smile from his face.

Congratulations to all.

SEPTEMBER 2005 - TRAINING CAMP

The weekend camp held on the weekend of 3rd and 4th of September was a great success and all attendees returned home late on Sunday tired, happy and crammed to overflowing with new knowledge.

The 5 hour Saturday session was restricted to 2nd kyu and above, allowing the seniors to learn from and share with their fellow seniors. All learned a new Kata, Ufuchiku No Jo, and also revised Kata Sankakutobi and Naihanchin Waza. In addition, the hand techniques of the Renzoku Kogeki were learned / revised.

The seniors met later on Saturday evening at a local restaurant for the inaugural "Black Belt of the Year" dinner. The "Black Belt of the Year" award is decided by the nominations and votes of the senior Instructors and the unanimous choice for the 2005 award was Sensei Lesley Griffin, a truly deserving selection.

The 7 hour Sunday session commenced with Kata Naihanchin Sho followed by the Bunkai, the students were split into small groups and each group formulated their own interpretation of the Bunkai. Each group then demonstrated their Bunkai, all interpretations were excellent and everyone gained a greater appreciation of Kata in general. The seniors who weren't involved in the Bunkai sessions used the time well revising the Katas/Randoris practiced during the Saturday sessions.
The next session was Renzoku Kogeki Te waza for all grades and everybody participated with vigor.

The time had come for presentation of Dan Grades to the four students who had completed their Shodan gradings at the July camp, Sensei Tony Fletcher, Sensei Kyran Findlater, Sensei Mattiah Matakovic and Sensei Matthew Schultz. They received their Diplomas and Obi then presented short celebration demonstrations.

Due to the fact that most Kyu grade students had graded in July there were only two candidates for Kyu gradings but both performed exceptionally and their promotions were well deserved. Amanda Bugden, 2nd Kyu, attended the Saturday training sessions and had already demonstrated Randori Ni, Sai No Kata and Kata Naihanchin Yon for the seniors so she was asked to demonstrate Ufuchiku No Jo, a Kata she had only learned the previous day. She had clearly been paying attention on Saturday as she performed a nice demonstration before completing four "non-contact" kumite bouts with Dan grade fighters for her promotion to 1st Kyu. Next was Thu Nguyen, a 12 year old attempting her first grading, who demonstrated one of the best yellow belt gradings for her age we have seen and was awarded her yellow belt and an orange tip.

Special mention must be made of the two attendees from the Sydney Kengokai Dojo, Sensei Des Paroz and Sensei Mark Zaglas, and also Sensei Mark Slingo from Rockhampton, who traveled great distances to be there. Their attendance is appreciated.

Our President, Sensei Des was responsible for the research which allowed us to learn Ufuchiku No Jo and also organizing the award trophy and the black belts for the awards ceremony, thanks Sensei Des.
Sensei Mark Zaglas, Nidan, is a former Shorinjiryu student who has now returned home and is of great assistance to Sensei Des at the new Kengokai Dojo. Welcome back Sensei Mark, it's great to have you back.

The spirit and application of everybody on both days of the camp was pleasing to the Instructors, spirit is not taught, it comes from within and with the spirit and comradeship shown at this camp it is evident that Australian Shorinjiryu is in very good shape.

JULY 2005 - COMBINED TRAINING CAMP

On Sunday July 17th we held our July combined one day camp and grading and it was a great success. The theme was expansion of technique and movement.
We commenced with Kata Naihanchin Yon then Sensei Anne held a session on expansion of technique. We then followed up with expansion of Randori technique using Renshu Ichi as our base.
The class was then split with the seniors using the expansion principles on Sankakutobi Shodan Ichi with Me and Sensei Lesley while Sensei Luisa and Sensei Krystal took the lower grades through Kata Ananku with an emphasis on expansion of technique.

This was followed by Kyu gradings, Shodan demonstrations by Sensei Kyran, Sensei Mathia and Sensei Matthew and then Sensei Tony Fletcher's Shodan recognition demonstrations.

All performed great demonstrations and deserved their full Shodan promotions. There was a maturity shown by the three younger promotees that has not been evident before. It was well worth the wait.

The successful kyu grades were:-

Kelly Newton, Torakai, to 5th Kyu
Shannan Armstrong, Seiryukan, to 8th Kyu
Nick McGrory, Seiryukan, to 6th Kyu
Jarred Potter, Seiryukan, to 6th Kyu
Neil Potter, Seiryukan, to 6th Kyu
All performed nice gradings.

It was a great day made all the better by the attitude of all attendees, they were there to learn and it showed.

A special thank you to Sensei Mark and Jordan Slingo for making the effort to attend, it's a 13 hour round trip from Rockhampton.

We are now looking forward to the September camp!

Three Seiryukan students competed in the Championships which were held in Toowoomba.

Amanda Bugden performed a very nice Kata Naihanchin Yon against strong competition to gain second place in her Kata event and will be a Champion in the future. She was unlucky in her Kumite event for a third place.

Brendan Bone fought well for his second in his Kumite event.

Rachel Swanson surprised everyone with her power in her Kumite event and gained a first place.

As always, we are proud of our students and their commitment.

Shihan Jim Griffin was appointed Chief Referee for the day, Sensei Lesley Griffin and Sensei Laurie Buxton both officiated as Judges and assisted on the official table.

SHORINJIRYU TRAINING CAMP - MARCH 2005

Members of all Australian Shorinjiryu Dojos gathered together on the weekend of 19th to 20th of March at Margate Queensland for our annual training camp and gradings. The Dojos represented were as follows:-

Cairns, North Queensland
Innisfail, North Queensland
Rockhampton, Central Queensland
Burpengary, South Queensland
Springwood, South Queensland
Coonabarabran, North Western New South Wales
Sydney, New South Wales

Many students and Instructors traveled between 600 and 1000 miles to attend and none were disappointed.

Day one commenced with a session by Sensei Anne Aylward on extension of technique which was followed by a practical self-defense session by Sensei Peter Deasy. Following a short break, a fun session on Yon Nin Kumite was hosted by Sensei Max Estens and Sensei Graeme Bowden. Following lunch, Kata Naihanchin Yon was taught by Sensei Jim Griffin then Sensei Des Paroz hosted an extended session on Kata Gorin No Bo and the four Gorin No Bo Kumites.

Following dinner and the Association annual general meeting, it was “Showtime” where the students and Instructors get a chance to show their “talents”. For some reason, the Springwood students always have some form of cross-dressing in their show, they have serious problems! Sensei Krystal Sciacca performed an excellent modern dance routine which included sai and brought the house down. Sammy Sciacca entertained us with a few tunes pounded out on his cheeks and Amanda Bugden played a few riffs on her guitar. Daniel Coleman and James Bowden produced some questionable jokes, all the more questionable due to their tender ages. Then came a hilarious session of “celebrity heads” and Kata “mini” naihanchin performed by Sensei Des Paroz, obviously Sensei Des had not paid attention earlier in the day! Sensei Jim Griffin tried to get a rousing rendition of the club drinking song going but this was made difficult by the fact that alcohol is not allowed at our camps.

Day two commenced after breakfast at 8.30am with a mixed session of Kata Ananku and Gokyo No Kumite, hosted by Sensei Des Paroz and two prospective Shodan Ho’s, Deepak Grewal and Trevor Casini which was followed by a Kata Sankakutobi session hosted by Sensei Lesley Griffin.

Following lunch, the Kyu and Dan gradings commenced and continued for the next three hours. The four prospective Shodan Ho’s, Trevor Cassini, Deepak Patel, Petra Matakovic and Jason Romer were thoroughly examined on their knowledge of many Shorinjiryu Katas, Kumites, Bunkais and Defenses and then followed up with around 60 minutes of continuous “light contact” kumite. Following the kumite, they were all exhausted and bruised but happy in the knowledge that they had earned their promotions. The successful students were:-

Trevor Casini, Shodan Ho
Deepak Grewal, Shodan Ho
Petra Matakovic, Shodan Ho
Jason Romer, Shodan Ho
Damien Powers, 1st Kyu
Amanda Bugden, 2nd Kyu
Nick McGrory, 8th Kyu
Jarred Potter, 8th Kyu
Neil Potter, 7th Kyu

Sensei Max Estens, Godan, Sensei Graeme Bowden, Yondan and Sensei Des Paroz, Yondan were presented with their Australian Dan grade certificates by Sensei Jim Griffin following their successful promotions by Kyoshi Myron late in 2004.

It was time to leave, tired but happy, and already looking forward to next year. The spirit and friendship of our great Style makes these training camps the highlight of our year.

 KYOSHI MYRON'S VISIT - NOVEMBER 2004

Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo recently had the pleasure of a visit by Kyoshi Myron Lubitsch, Shihan Vincent Capers and Shodan Christian Hernandez so I thought it a good idea to put their efforts into print.

They arrived in Brisbane at around 8.00 am on Sunday 28th November following  22 hours travel and they were cleaned up, refreshed and ready to commence training by 10.00 am at a combined Shorinjiryu training camp.

We had students and Instructors attend from Innisfail (1000 miles), Sydney (600 miles), Coonabarabran (500 miles) and Rockhampton (400 miles) in addition to the local Brisbane Dojos. Shihan Phill Hooper attended, as did Sensei Chris Kliese, Sensei Tom Griffin, Sensei Julie Hooper, Sensei Beth Wall and Sensei Kerry Kneen along with many current Dan and Kyu gardes. These people remembered Kyoshi Myron from his visit in 1985 and were keen to catch up with him again, most are not actively training at present but you never really stop training in Shorinjiryu.

Kyoshi Myron took the class, with assistance from Shihan Vincent and Shodan Christian and we progressed through Naihanchin Yon and some Sankakutobi Kumites for about 4 hours followed by Kyu gradings then Dan grading demonstrations by Sensei Max Estens (Godan), Sensei Graeme Bowden (Yondan) and Sensei Des Paroz (Yondan). Shihan Phill Hooper was presented with his Nanadan belt and diploma followed by the other Dan grades. A traditional sake’ ceremony was completed with enthusiasm.

It was home for a cleanup at around 4.00 pm and a relatively early night.

We went sightseeing early on Monday, Bribie Island, the Ettamogah Pub, Montville in the mountains for lunch then visited the Queensland Zoo where they all got to cuddle a koala, Shihan Vincent got to go eye to eye with an old man kangaroo (the kangaroo won)  and Shodan Chrisitan nursed a blue tongue lizard. We were now late for our 4.00 pm training session at my Seiryukan Dojo but not too late and we complete a spirited 90 min. session before cleaning up and heading into Brisbane for a Japanese meal of Sukiake and Shabu Shabu and a few sake’s with the local Instructors. A late night!

Tuesday commenced with picking up Shihan Phill for a day on the Gold Coast but first we visited the Mack factory for a short tour so Shihan Vincent and Shodan Christian could have their photos taken in a big Mack truck. From there we were off to point Danger then lunch at Burleigh Heads, a tour through Surfers Paradise and back to the Seiryukan Dojo for the normal 2 hour Tuesday training session. The training was followed by a quick meal and another late night.

Wednesday saw us visit Noosa where Sensei Tom Griffin was ready to show us the sights. We visited the Noosa National Park where we got to watch dolphins surfing close up, an eagle soaring and posing for pictures at the same time then on to Alexandria Bay where Sensei Tom and Shodan Christian went in for a surf. It was then back to Noosa for lunch. We walked a total of about 6 miles in the heat. We dropped Sensei Tom off and then headed back to Brisbane for training at the Seiryukan Dojo again. After about 2 hours training we cleaned up and had a great bar-b-cue meal of steak, shrimp and calamari cooked by yours truly. Another late night.

Thursday was sightseeing in Brisbane City, we walked, shopped, lunched in the Botanical Gardens, walked some more, toured Parliament House, walked some more, an early dinner at a Japanese takeaway then off to Springwood for training at Sensei Anne Aylward’s Torakai Dojo. A special training guest was Sensei Mark Vanneikerk from Shorinjiryu Shindokan and also Shihan Laurie Vanneikerk, his wife Dale  and Sensei Richard Bryant (they didn’t train). (Shihan Laurie trained with Kaiso in the early days).

We trained for about 2 hours then visited Shihan Laurie’s house for a meal and many stories of yesteryear before heading home, in trouble, at around 1.00 am. Sensei Lesley Griffin, my wife, has no sense of humor!

Friday morning was the time to say good bye to our honored guests so we drove them to the airport for their lunch time flight. I understand everything went smoothly from then on, late flights, lost luggage, late arrival in New York, no problem.

The New Yorkers had finished their relaxing Oz holiday and were well rested, we drove around 900 miles, trained for around 14 hours, Kyoshi Myron wore a hat and shorts, Shihan Vincent took 1500 photos and Shodan Christian smiled, all in around 90 deg F heat. A great holiday!

Seriously, the effort and commitment of these three fine Karateka and gentlemen during their Oz visit will be remembered and talked about for years to come. We thank them and appreciate their friendship and guidance.

Karateka from different Schools from opposite sides of the globe training as one with no issues, politics or baggage, I love Shorinjiryu!

SEPTEMBER 2004 - SPRING TRAINING CAMP

There was a good turnout for the training camp and all went away with a better knowledge of Kata Sanchin, Ananku and Gorin No Bo, these Kata being the focus of the day. The day started with a warm up session, followed by kata Ananku. Everybody then participated in a spirited kumite session followed by Kata Gorin No Bo. Later, those wishing to brush up on Kata Sanchin did so. Shihan Jim Griffin was assisted by Sensei Lesley Griffin and Sensei Anne Aylward.

Also showing the strength of the Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo contingent were the officials and referees from our style. Shihan Jim Griffin (Seiryukan) was the Chief Referee of the tournament, with Sensei Max Estens (Kensuukan) and Sensei Des Paroz (Kengokai) officiating as Referees, whilst Sensei Anne Aylward (Torakai), Sensei Lesley Griffin (Seiryukan) and Sensei Laurie Buxton (Seiryukan) serving as Judges. As a result of their efforts in the examination and their work during the day, Sensei Max and Sensei Des were re-accredited as National Referees, whilst Sensei Laurie was promoted to the status of National Judge.

The 2004 National Koshiki Championships certainly mark a return of Australian Shorinjiryu as a powerhouse of Koshiki, and position us well for continued growth in 2005.
